Instructions Following Oral Surgery
1. BLEEDING - Maintain pressure on a sterile gauze packing for the prescribed amount of time. If some post operative bleeding occurs later, put biting pressure on the sterile gauze for twenty minutes at a time.
IF PERSISTENT BLEEDING CANNOT BE CONTROLLED PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE!
2. DO NOT RINSE MOUTH TODAY - Tomorrow rinse your mouth gently every 3-4 hours (especially after meals) using one-half teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water. Continue rinsing your mouth for 5-6 days.
3. TO PREVENT SWELLING - Apply an ice bag or chopped ice wrapped in a towel, to the side of your face (one half hour on, fifteen minutes off) for 4-5 hours. Beginning the second post-operative day if facial swelling is apparent apply heat, in the form of moist compresses. This can be done with a moist wash cloth and a hot bottle against the face. Swelling tends to increase for 2 to 3 days after surgery. Do not become alarmed if there is more swelling today than yesterday.
4. MEDICATIONS - Prescribed medications should be taken as directed.
5. FOOD - A light diet is advisable for the first 24 hours. Do not use hot liquids for at least one hour after surgery. If you are troubled by nausea and vomiting, call our office for advice.
6. BONE EDGES - Bone or sharp fragments may work through the gums during healing. These are not roots! If they persist, contact our office for their simple removal.
7. HYGIENE - It is important to keep your mouth clean. Brush and floss carefully.
8. SMOKING - Smoking is not advised. Don't smoke after surgery. Inhaling creates suctions, and it could loosen the blood clot.
9. EXERCISE - Limit strenuous activity for 24 hours after the extraction. This will reduce bleeding and help the blood clot form.
10. DRINKING AND SPITTING - Do not use sucking motions, such as when using a straw to drink or spit. Doing either of these may dislodge the blood clot and cause a dry socket.
11. ALCOHOL - Do not consume alcohol for at least 24 hours following surgery or at any time while taking prescribed medications.
